Pro and Con of Soil Blocking
Over the winter, our seed collection was growing but I knew we didn't have a lot of space or nursery pots to plant in.
Enter soil blocking.
Being through one planting season with them, I have discovered some pro's and con's of the soil block.
Pro's
~ The soil blocker makes quick work of planting many seeds.
~ With the correct watering can, watering is quick and simple. Use a watering can with a single hole in order to water each roll.
~ The blocks easily pot up once it's time.
Con's
~ They dry out quickly and some seeds are not as forgiving when they get try. The brassica seedlings, cabbage and broccoli, that I planted did not like any variants in temperature of moist levels.
~ Putting the rows to closely together will led to difficulties in watering and make the soil block disintegrate.
~A certain Soil consistency is needed in order for the blocks to hold. Too moist or too dry will cause the soil to stay together.
Over all, the soil blocking will be in my seed routine for years to come as it's a great way to start the season on a smaller scale and pot up the seedlings that germinate.
